Stephens students become published poets

Students

Congratulations to Stephens Elementary students Jayla Martin, Braylen Arnold, I'Quira Tate, Aysha Taylor, Addisha Nichols, Hakeem Williams, Savon Jackson, Kayron Watkins and Jeluntae Lambert who were selected to have their original poetry published in Award-Winning Young Writers of America! Their teacher, Belinda Burney, submitted their poems to the Young Writers of America Poetry Contest, and they recently received letters of congratulations informing them that their works would be published in the 2009 Southern Region edition.

Less than 20 percent of entries are selected for publication. The poetry contest was open to all students in the United States enrolled in grades 3 through 8. The poems were reviewed by a panel of public school teachers and were judged on creativity, artistic quality, artistic expression and originality. The students are inspired to become better writers and readers and gain the knowledge that they can compete and be successful in their education and accomplishments. Seeing these students receive such a prestigious accolade also will inspire other students to do their very best!
